Dearest Friends,

February - the month of love, St. Valentines and the heart.

The heart is an amazingly efficient and elegant organ. The human heart weighs just less than a pound, beats a half billion times in a typical lifetime and pumps 8000 gallons of blood an estimated 12000 miles EVERYDAY through our bodies.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada reports that 75000 of us die annually from heart disease and stroke. At least 4 out of 5 of us have at least one risk factor for heart disease. Together, heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of death in this country.

Ladies, 1 out of 10 of us will die of breast cancer BUT 40% of us will die of heart disease!

So - what can we do? What can we do to protect ourselves from this silent killer?

We can come here and learn to live more healthfully and to:
  • Lose weight and maintain a healthy weight;
  • Not smoke;
  • Limit alcohol consumption;
  • Eat well;
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure;
  • Control your stress;
  • Move your body

Cardiac Electro physiologist Dr. Duff was recently quoted in a Calgary paper as saying "We take care of our houses. We buy stuff. We want stuff. You would think that people would take better care of their hearts than their cars, but they don’t" he complains. " Our bodies, our hearts are the only thing we really own. They are what determines how long we are going to be here"

How true is that? What are you going to do to take care of your heart?

The Importance of Anchors

Remember when you were told to tie a string around your finger as a reminder of something? That was a way to "anchor" a thought, turn it into something tangible. Anchors reinforce the power of suggestion. It serves as a reminder about something important to you.

Displayed in the colour of success, it is a continual reminder that healthy living is where it is "at". Another great recipe from www.lizpearson.com

Big Breakfast Cookies (A Snack’n Powerhouse)

* Makes 24 really big cookies
* 1 Serving = 1 really big cookie

These cookies are great as a snack or breakfast on the run. Pack milk and a small handful of nuts, and you’re good to go.

  • 2 cups (500 mL) large flake rolled oats
  • 2 cups (500 mL) whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup (125 mL) oat bran
  • ½ cup (125 mL) ground flaxseed
  • 2 cups (500 mL) dried cranberries
  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL) cinnamon
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
  • ½ cup (125 mL) dark brown sugar
  • 2 omega-3 eggs
  • ¼ cup (60 mL) canola oil
  • one 4.5-oz (128 mL) jar baby food strained prunes
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) pure vanilla extract
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the oats, flour, oat bran, flaxseed, dried cranberries, cinnamon, and baking soda.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, eggs, canola oil, prunes, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add this to the dry ingredients and stir until well combined. You can use a stand mixer if you like, but all those muscles working to mix the batter burns calories. Who says baking can’t be good for you?
  5. Drop the batter onto the cookie sheet using either a ¼ cup (60 mL) measuring cup or ¼ cup (60 mL) ice cream scoop. Gently press down on the cookies so they are 1/8-inch (3 mm) thick. If it’s too sticky, lightly dampen your hands, then press down.
  6. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven. Let them sit on the cookie sheet for 5 minutes to set. Gently move cookies to a cooling rack. Let them cool completely and then store in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Or separate, bag, and freeze for up to 3 months. They’ll be ready to pop into your briefcase or purse on the way out the door.

Each cookie contains: 160 Calories, 4.5 g Total Fat, 0 g Sat Fat, 0 g Trans Fat, 60 mg Sodium, 29 g CHO, 4 g Fiber, 4 g Protein.
